Reading this week: The mission of the church
This week we’ll learn God’s heart from his work in the life of Jonah. Watch for everything that God provides in this story, including the Holy Spirit at work in the hearts of sailors and Ninevites.
Monday: Jonah 1:1-17, The hearts of the sailors
Yes, God provides the storm. How have you seen God at work in the storms of your life? Notice that the sailors, not the prophet, cry out to God. When was God faithful to your cry?
Tuesday: Jonah 2:1-10, Jonah’s prayer from the belly
In the Muslim version of this story, even the sea creatures join in Jonah’s prayer. Who was there to bear witness at your “seaweed wrapped around my head” moment? How does Jonah’s prayer inspire your prayers?
Wednesday: Jonah 3:1-10, The power of the gospel
Are you surprised at the response of the Ninevites to the gospel? When has the power of the Holy Spirit to move a heart been this evident in your life? When have your experienced God’s compassion?
Thursday: Jonah 4:1-11, God even cares about the cattle
Jonah still have a lesson to learn about God’s heart. How did God teach you that he cares about Anacortes, even our many cattle! How do you think Jonah answers God’s final question? What would your answer be?
Friday: Psalm 84, A home for the sparrow and a home for me
A friend shared this beautiful song with me on Sunday afternoon. Like the sparrow, have you found a home near God’s altar? How has your journey through the “Valley of Weeping” been an opportunity to experience God’s blessing?
Saturday: Psalm 85, A prayer for restoration
How has God’s history of restoration encouraged you? When did you most need the reminder that “the Lord will indeed give what is good”?
